Meet our 2023 Promotions

Director - Willem-Jan Cosemans

29 November 2023

In this Q&A series we want to put our newly promoted colleagues in the picture. Our first entry in the series is Willem-Jan Cosemans, Director in the IP/IT team.

Deloitte Legal-Lawyers (DL): Congratulations on your recent promotion to Director!  What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?

Thank you! I am mostly looking forward to continuing what I have been doing over the past years and to help further expanding the IP/IT practice within Deloitte Legal. More particularly I look forward to working with my colleagues and assist clients in the Media & Entertainment industry and to guide them in protecting their Intellectual Property Rights. Finally I would love to further strengthen our connection with the different Deloitte business units, with whom we are already working closely together.

DL: What are the main challenges you see?

For start- and scale-ups: to convince them to invest in their intellectual property rights and data as this almost always pays off in the long run.

For all companies: to keep up with all regulatory requirements resulting from the EU Digital Strategy, such as the AI Act, Data Act, Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act.

DL: What are your key focus areas?

I have a TMT focus with a special interest and experience in Media & Entertainment.

Furthermore I guide companies in the protection of their creations, brands and inventions by means of Intellectual Property Rights, with a particular focus on trademarks and copyrights.

DL: Do you have any recommendations for lawyers wanting to advance their knowledge?

Be eager to learn, ask for feedback to senior colleagues and once you have a solid background, focus on the areas of the law that you love the most.

DL: If there is one misconception you could clear up about your areas of expertise, what would it be?

There are many more types of intellectual property rights than you might think. The first reflex is very often to think about patents but there is much more, such as copyrights, trademarks, software rights and database rights. These should all be considered when seeking for IP protection. Finally other types of rights, closely related to IP rights, such as image rights, trade secrets and rights in data should also not be overlooked.

DL:  If you look back at yourself when you started, what advice would you give yourself?

That’s a difficult one as I consider myself to be very lucky with the opportunities I have received from the very start of my career.

If I would give myself one advice it would probably be to try to focus on business opportunities from the very start although this is not an easy advice to live up with.

DL:  Are there any closing thoughts you would like to share?

I very much look forward to continuing my journey at Deloitte Legal!
