Filip Smet interviewed by De Tijd on Tax authorities' knowledge of taxpayer assets abroad

Authorities to be well informed through automatic exchange of information

18 April 2016

Filip Smet, Senior Associate in Laga's Tax controversy team, was interviewed by De Tijd on the extent of the Belgian tax authorities' knowledge of taxpayers' assets on foreign territory.

While scandals such the LuxLeaks and the very recent Panama Papers continue to bring the tax evasion and avoidance problem to light, strides have been made towards the implementation of an automatic information exchange system.

According to Filip, the scale of information exchange through this system will be "truly spectacular". Filip elaborates that exchanged information would go beyond identification data and will include, among others, offshore bank balances as well as obtained interest and dividends.
